Points of Interest



1. "The Abbey"--built in 1889 by Joaquin Miller, the site has been a Registered National Historic landmark since 1963 and was recognized by Native Sons of the Golden West in 1928.

2. Tot Lot--installed in 2004.

3. The Cascades--the lower fountain was originally built for the 1935-36 Golden Gate International Exposition. It was moved to oakland in 1941 under the Works progress Administration (WPA) construction of the Cascades.

4. Robin Paerry Field--a rental softball field. call (510) 238-3187 for reservations.

5. Woodminster Amphitheater--a 1941 WPA project; now used for summer musicals (www.woodminster.com) and other performances.

6. Dog Park--the only off-leash area in the park.

7. Joaquin Miller Native Plant Nursery--developed in 2001 by the Friends of Sausal Creek, the nursery provides native plants for park and creek restoration and school projects (www.sausalcreek.org).

8. Ranger Station--built in 1959, the station houses the Visitor Center, Park Rangers and the park's only pay phone.

9. Joaquin Miller Community Center--constructed in 1996, the facility is rented out for weddings, meetings and special events. Call (510) 238-3187 for reservations.

10. Sequoia Horse Arena--built in 1948, the arena host the metropolitan Horseman's Association's shows and trails rides. Call (510) 531-5449 for reservations.

11. Chabot Space and Science Center--internationally recognized space observatory and science museum, located at 10000 Skyline Boulevard. Nation's largest telescopes, open for public viewing, free most Fridays & Saturdays, weather permitting (www.Chabotspace.com).

12. rotary Day Camp--donated by the Rotary Club of oakland for outdoor use by Oakland youth.
