Small businesses need a nurturing
environment during the critical first years of operations. Since these businesses provide
the majority of new jobs, Oakland has participated in the development of two incubator
facilities. The Communications Technology Cluster currently houses more than 30 high-tech
start-ups employing more than 120 people. Recent graduates of the incubator have been able
to secure more than $10 million in private capital. The Oakland Small Business Growth
Center, established in 1993, contains 19 businesses and employs over 40 people. These
facilities offer shared business services, training, and technical support at attractive
rents. |
