City Work Force Program

Oakland has the job-ready workforce that is required to build new business ventures.

Oakland residents rank sixth in the nation in educational achievement. More than one-third of Oakland’s residents have a college degree--twice the national average.

The Oakland metro area is an academic environment with more than 100,000 students attending local universities and colleges, including U.C. Berkeley, California State University, Hayward, and Mills College.

The region is consistently rated among the top places to do business due to the interaction between academia and the business community. Many of the country’s major research centers with links to industry are located here, including:

  • The University of California, Berkeley

  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

  • Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

  • Sandia National Laboratory

  • NASA Ames Research Center
