Sanitary Sewer Section

This section is responsible for the overall planning and management of the Sanitary Sewer and Storm Drainage Capital Improvements Program. The section also provides engineering services to other City departments when requested.

The section is also responsible for the following functions:

1. Establishing and updating engineering design standards
   1. Sanitary Sewer Design Guidelines
   2. Storm Drainage Design Guidelines
2. Sanitary sewer capital program
3. Infiltration / inflow correction program
4. DEIR / EIR review
5. P-Job review
6. Sewer mitigation fee
7. Regulatory compliance
8. Sewer and storm drain investigations
9. Other tasks as needed

• Maintain over 1,000 miles of sanitary sewer pipes (the distance from City Hall to Denver, CO); 31,000 structures and 7 pump stations.
• Most of the system is over 50 years old, and some as old as 100 years.
• Respond to 2,900 calls annually and provide routine inspection and maintenance of pipes to prevent spills.
• A sewer service charge on your EBMUD water bill is used for capital repairs and maintenance of the sanitary sewer system.

• Storm drain system consists of 370 miles of pipes, 16,000 structures, 40 miles of creeks, and 5 pump stations.
• Distribute sand bags and plastic sheeting to residents to minimize water problems during a storm.
• Adopt-a-Drain Program enables residents to help keep inlets near their homes clear in the winter.
• Perform routine inspections and cleaning of storm drains to prevent flooding.
• Replace storm grates with bicycle-safe grates covering about 93 miles of bike lanes and routes.
• $221 million in capital improvements are needed, $35 million of which are high priority.
