"A Day On, Not a Day Off" Shoreline Walk, Volunteer Planting and Restoration

Naturalists will lead a shoreline walk to share the history of the marsh and how it came to be known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Shoreline. Following the walk, a volunteer project, led by park staff, will include planting, clean-up and environmental restoration along the shoreline. Pre-registration required for volunteer project. 9th Annual Martin Luther King National Holiday Celebration, "Make The Dream Real"

Rev. Ron Swisher and Dr. Matthew Fox will host this event encouraging more Americans to celebrate the MLK national holiday as a day of service in communities. Kokomon Clottey will open with sacred drumming, honoring our ancestors. Four Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Awards will be given to deserving community members who are doing exemplary service work. The celebration highlights the work of women as peacemakers - first and foremost, Mrs. Coretta Scott King. Author/ storyteller/spiritual leader Chief Luisah Teish will deliver the keynote address. Luncheon following the celebration. Presented by the Attitudinal Healing Connection, Inc., Center for Art and Public Life at CCA, Taylor Memorial Methodist Church and Wisdom University.

Michael Morgan conducts the West Coast premiere of "Black Suit Blues" written by local composer Nolan Gasser about the impact Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has had on the country. Performance will feature baritone Robert Sims. The program's second half will feature a magnificent work befitting a Dr. King tribute - Schubert's "Symphony No. 9, The Great." Presented by the Oakland East Bay Symphony.
