Dunsmuir House & Gardens Historic Estate Dunsmuir House & Gardens Historic Estate features a turn-of-the-century mansion, carriage house, farm buildings and landscaped grounds, nestled in a secluded valley in the Oakland Hills. The 37-room Dunsmuir House was built in 1899 by Alexander Dunsmuir, heir to a coal fortune, as a wedding gift to his wife Josephine Wallace. The 16,000 square foot mansion features a Tiffany-style dome, 10 fireplaces and inlaid parquet floors, and is one of the best examples of Colonial Revival architecture in the Bay Area. Although the City of Oakland owns the Dunsmuir Mansion and surrounding 40-acre estate, the non-profit organization Dunsmuir House & Gardens, Inc., assumes a very large financial responsibility including the preservation, restoration and management of the property. Dunsmuir relies on the help and generosity of our friends and neighbors, who support our mission with memberships and donations. Dunsmuir House & Gardens, Inc., also presents an annual calendar of tours and multi-cultural events which allow our community to enjoy the estate. Major events include the Oakland Scottish Games in July, A Gatsby Summer Afternoon in September, outdoor concerts, and our Christmas festivities in December. Please call (510) 615-5555 for more information.
