  • Stay away from windows, skylights, glass doors.
  • Do not use elevator.
  • Remain calm.

When Outdoors

When in a Vehicle

  • Pull over until shaking stops.
  • Proceed cautiously, if safe to do so.
  • Do not attempt to cross damaged roads.
  • Do not stop under overpasses or on bridges.
  • Do not abandon your vehicle, except if it is unsafe to stay in it.
  • Remain calm.

AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE

  • Try to account for everyone.
  • Check for injuries and give first aid.
  • Check for gas leaks and fire. Turn off gas valve only if you smell or hear gas. If you do smell gas, do not turn lights on or off and do not light a match.
  • Once the gas is off, leave it off until PG&E turns it on.
  • If the electricity is out, unplug computers and other equipment. If there are sparks or electrical fires, turn off the electricity at the main switch.
  • Immediately after the earthquake, do not use the phone, unless you need an ambulance, fire truck or other emergency help.
  • Call your out-of-state emergency contact to report your status.
  • If the house or building must be vacated, go to your pre-determined meeting site or where authorities tell you to go. If possible, secure the house or building before you leave.
  • Listen to the radio, KCBS 740 or KGO 810 for instructions and information.
  • Remain calm.
