Fire
Safety Tips
- Install and maintain smoke detectors. Change
your batteries when you change your clock for daylight savings
time.
- Keep an ABC portable extinguisher accessible
on each floor of house, especially in kitchen and garage.
Keep extinguisher in working order and have it recharged
at least once a year.
- Plan and practice to escape a home fire.
Identify at least two ways to escape from every room of
your home and incorporate these into an escape plan.
- Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from combustibles.
Turn space heaters off when going to bed or leaving the
premises.
- Keep flammables and combustibles on a low
shelf, sealed in metal containers and stored in cool environments,
away from all heat sources.
- Never smoke in bed.
- Never leave pots and pans on stove unattended.
Turn pot or pan handles away from the stove edge.
- Teach children that matches are tools, not
toys.
- Do not overload electrical outlets. Do not
run electrical cords under carpets or in high foot traffic
areas.
- Crawl low in a smoke-filled room.
- Always feel a door for heat with the back
of your hand before opening it. Do not open door if it is
hot.
- If your clothes catch on fire, STOP, DROP
and ROLL.
- Cool yourself with water. Treat a burn with
cool water.
