More Oakland Residents Involved In Emergency Preparedness Training
Approximately 50 citizens graduated from the CORE (Citizens of Oakland Respond to Emergencies) training program on Wednesday, April 18 at City Hall. Oakland residents from the Rockridge, North Oakland, Piedmont Avenue, Laurel, Allendale, and Eastmont Hills areas of Oakland have completed CORE Emergency Response Team training. These residents are forming or strengthening their neighborhood CORE groups to secure emergency supplies, establish a neighborhood command center, develop evacuation plans, learn two-way radio communications and practice their emergency response skills on a regular basis.
Besides learning life-saving skills, the CORE program really encourages neighbors to get to know one another; their skills, resources and special needs, because when a major emergency occurs, they will depend on one another for help. CORE teaches residents self-reliance skills and the importance of being prepared and organized as professional responders may simply become overwhelmed and unable to respond to all the incidents caused by a large-scale emergency.
At the graduation ceremony, CORE Instructors who are all volunteers were also recognized by a special presentation, along with citizens who regularly volunteer to be "victims" during the emergency response hands-on training. Those who came socialized and networked at the reception following the ceremony.
