The Fire Code Unit is responsible for the inspection and enforcement of the California Fire Code adopted by the City of Oakland for existing structures and businesses.

Fire Code Inspectors inspect and approve the installation and maintenance of fire suppression, fire detection, and life safety equipment per California Code of Regulations Title 19, Health and Safety Code.

All commercial occupancies and residential (hotel, motel, apartments, condominiums, and high-rise) are inspected regularly. 

The Fire Code Unit also issues, inspects, and renews permits based on business operation, product use and/or storage in the facilities regulated by the fire code
