Maintaining Your Commercial or Industrial Business or Property

Your business is an important asset to Oakland. The following are requirements to maintain the appearance of your business or property and remove health and safety hazards.

Storefronts and Other Facades
All facades must be maintained. If there is cracked, blistering or peeling paint, surfaces must be repainted. Windows must be unboarded and reglazed and broken items repaired.

Business Activities
Commercial or industrial activities using or storing unsightly equipment or materials, which have a detrimental aesthetic or economic impact on neighboring properties, must be adequately screened from the public street. Screening materials include fences, walls and hedges that are high enough to provide adequate coverage.

Unpaved Areas
Dirt areas which generate dust such as unpaved parking lots, storage yards, driveways and paths must be covered with a hard surface such as asphalt, concrete or other approved material.

Cracks and Potholes
Hazardous conditions in paved surfaces such as cracks, potholes or other breaks in driveways, parking lots or walkways must be repaired and maintained.

Smoke, Odors, Fumes, Sprays and Dirt
Debris or other airborne substances such as smoke or dust which are carried to neighboring properties and/or violate federal, state, regional or local air quality standards are prohibited.

Vacant Lots
Vacant lots must be properly fenced to deter dumping. Fencing can be chain link (cyclone), wood or any other approved material no higher than 6 feet.

Obsolete, Broken or Defaced Structures
All buildings, facades, fences, signs, retaining walls or other structures which are defaced, deteriorated or marked with graffiti must be repaired or removed.

Toxic Materials, Animal Waste, Decayed Vegetation and Other Offensive Materials
Materials which are toxic, hazardous or offensive must be properly and safely contained and appropriately disposed of so as not to accumulate and pose a threat to the health and safety of the community.

Landscaping
Landscaping must be well maintained. Remove overgrown weeds, trim grass and shrubbery and keep the area free of litter and debris.
