OAKLAND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE
Oakland recognizes the need to implement sustainable development strategies that ensure both the long-term economic health and the environmental quality of our community.
"Sustainability" is commonly defined as meeting current economic, social, and cultural needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Some refer to sustainability in Oakland as addressing the
"3 Es": Environment, Economy, and (social) Equity. Oakland translated these goals into practical objectives – achieving a community that benefits its people, builds housing for its people, offers jobs and businesses for the benefit of its people, and ensures a healthy safe environment for protection of its people.
In late 1998, the Oakland City Council adopted a Sustainable Community Development Initiative. This called for a series of action steps for the community, ensuring that sustainable practices are integral to:
- Economic development
- Employment training and continuing education
- In-fill housing, mixed use development, and sustainable ("green") building
- City operations and services as a model of sustainable practices
- Community participation in the on-going process of Oakland’s development
An explanation of the City’s initiative work areas and progress can be found under within the "Incentives" section of the Oakland Business Information and Economic Development Webpage.
