1.  Annual Dues
Membership cost is a non-refundable annual fee of $20.00.
Renewals are due February 28th. On March 1st, renewals add a $5.00 late fee.
If Councilmember Brooks’ office has not received your membership renewal by March 15th, your garden plot will be reassigned to the next person on the waiting list.

2. Plot Assignment
Each gardener is assigned one standard-size plot. If the space proves too large to handle, the Program Coordinator can divide the area to accommodate an additional gardener. No gardener can have a space in more than one garden.

3. Garden Maintenance
Each gardener is responsible for keeping her/his plot and adjacent paths free of weeds year round. Summer gardening begins in early spring. Your plots needs to be weeded and planted by May 1st. Winter gardening begins in early fall. Your plot needs to be replanted with a winter or cover crop, amended with compost or covered with mulch by November 1st.
Beautiful community gardens require year-round active gardening by each member. Should there be a change in your ability to garden, don't wait and let the weeds take over. Give us a call, because non-communication and a weedy plot could result in the cancellation or non-renewal of your membership.

4. Membership = Active Participation
An additional twenty hours (20) per year for the management, meetings and maintenance of your community garden is requested of each member. Each year, the community garden members need to schedule three (3) meetings/work parties and select a coordinating committee. The garden committee assists with special events, delegates maintenance/repairs of common areas, and communicates any concerns and or needs of the garden with the City coordinator on a quarterly basis.

5. Extended Absences
(maximum 3 months)
For the benefit of the whole garden, members need to call their site coordinator and city staff in writing. Please include a timeline and the how the assigned plot will be cared for. Failure to do so or absences beyond three months will result in the reassignment of the plot and your name will be added to the waiting list.

6. Cancellation of Membership
When gardeners do not actively maintain their plots and/or do not participate in membership meetings, Parks & Recreation reserves the right to cancel your membership and assign the plot to the next person on the waiting list. A thirty-day notice will be given to a gardener prior to cancellation.

7. Safety comes first in the garden!
Please lock the gate when leaving. All tools should be used cautiously and cleaned after usage. When something needs to be replaced or repaired, please call the garden coordinator and volunteer to help. No open flame cooking, barbeques, or burning of weeds permitted.

8. Tools
This program provides some basic gardening tools such as shovels, rakes, trowels and hoses. Gardeners do need to purchases their own water-keys at their local hardware store. Please do not leave your water-key on top of the keyless spigot. The use of plastic groundcovers, plywood, painted or treated lumber is not permitted.

9. Children
Children must be closely supervised, since the adult present is responsible for their safety. Demonstrate tool safety and give each child adequate space when using a shovel, rake, hoe or trowel. No playing with water.

10. Organic = Composting
No artificial fertilizers or insect controlling chemicals may be used on your soil. Feed your soil quarterly with compost, and monitor how much you water and when. Each garden member is responsible for the maintenance of the compost area. Composting workshops are available at Lakeside Park. Call 510/444-soil for a schedule.

11. Respect
Members agree to respect other gardeners' efforts and do not trespass on their plots. Do not harvest or water other plots unless you have been asked to by another gardener.

12. Harvest
Should you have too much produce, please share the harvest with a neighbor, friend or call Oakland Potluck (510) 272-0414. Just letting it go to waste is not an option. The sale of produce grown on public property for personal gain is not permitted.

13. Letting Go
When you no longer wish to garden, please clean up your plot and notify the garden coordinator. Garden plots cannot be passed onto family members, friends, or housemates. The next person on the waiting list will be offered the plot.
