SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 2001, 1:15 P.M.

Oakland, CA (June 2, 2001) – Oakland City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente will join students, parents, teachers and neighbors of Lazear Elementary School for their first Community Work Weekend this Saturday at 1:15 p.m. to construct a new play area to be shared by the school and community. Working from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. both this Saturday and Sunday, volunteers will be completing the following projects:

  • building an entry way trellis to the new play area,
  • painting a mural designed by Lazear students and their teacher Mr. Lujan,
  • planting a new garden in front of the school, and
  • hanging giant steel letters that spell LAZEAR on the playground fence!

Council President De La Fuente has contributed $20,000 for the new play area through his capital improvement fund. Several bay area design professionals who helped design the project will be on hand to oversee construction, including volunteers from Pomegranate, a non-profit dedicated to creating community outdoor space.
