Through the State
of California's Employment Development Department
(EDD) certain bargaining units experiencing non-work related illnesses
or injuries are covered and eligible to apply for State Disability Insurance
(SDI); other employees who do not qualify for SDI, are covered under a
third party administrative insurance provider for both short
and long term disability. Benefits
begin after a seven-day elimination period and are determined by several
eligibility factors. An employee who chooses
to waive or cancel medical (only) benefits for themselves as well
as eligible dependents, may receive a monthly cash or Dependent
Care Assistance Plan (DCAP) contribution. At this time only firefighters
are required to show proof of outside coverage. The
Cafeteria Plan now includes a program that allows an employee the
opportunity to set aside pre-taxed dollars that are specifically
designated for utilizing mass transit. The
