Disability

Through the State of California's Employment Development Department (EDD) certain bargaining units experiencing non-work related illnesses or injuries are covered and eligible to apply for State Disability Insurance (SDI); other employees who do not qualify for SDI, are covered under a third party administrative insurance provider for both short and long term disability. Benefits begin after a seven-day elimination period and are determined by several eligibility factors.

The City of Oakland's most recent addition to its benefit choices includes:

Medical Waiver Premium   (Cafeteria Plan)

An employee who chooses to waive or cancel medical (only) benefits for themselves as well as eligible dependents, may receive a monthly cash or Dependent Care Assistance Plan (DCAP) contribution. At this time only firefighters are required to show proof of outside coverage.

Commuter Check Program

The Cafeteria Plan now includes a program that allows an employee the opportunity to set aside pre-taxed dollars that are specifically designated for utilizing mass transit. The
Commuter Check Program encourages rider ship on busses, trains and ferries while lowering taxable earnings.

A monthly payroll deduction of $100 plus an administrative fee is used to offset commuter expenses. Vouchers equaling the same set aside amount are mailed to the employee and can then be used at various locations that dispense tickets and passes.
