Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Cont'd

ADDITIONAL SERVICES

Management Coaches: The EAP offers managers and supervisors five sessions each fiscal year with a management coach to assist them in meeting their goals; improving their management skills; and obtaining objective, supportive feedback on addressing difficult issues. Coaching is a form of consulting designed to ensure that the client attains the desired results.

Meeting Facilitation: The EAP provides facilitators to lead and manage meetings to ensure that meeting goals are met. A facilitator can assist in running a meeting that requires a neutral third party or someone with expertise to address complex discussion topics.

Teambuilding Support: The EAP provides internal and external assistance to help work groups develop more cohesive, effective teams and establish a better means of communication, ground rules, group processes and team leadership.

Retreat Design: The EAP can assist agencies and departments in the development of their retreats by providing program design and external consultants with expertise in this area; it can also assist in facilitating retreats. Retreats are used for teambuilding, strategic planning and program development.

Threat Assessment: The EAP staff is part of the City's Threat Assessment Team and may be involved in assessing situations concerning threats and/or acts of violence in the workplace. The EAP's role is to assess employees who have made threatening statements and determine if counseling is indicated and to provide critical incident debriefings for the employees impacted by a threatening situation.

Critical Incident Debriefing: A critical incident debriefing is a group process facilitated by the EAP staff after a traumatic event has occurred. This process includes sharing how the event is impacting the participants; identifying their needs and concerns; providing information on how to take care of oneself and about the recovery process; and discussing the signs and symptoms that may merit further attention. This process is not group therapy; it is primarily educational and helps facilitate recovery.

Conflict Resolution: The EAP staff has expertise in addressing problems related to conflict and tension in the workplace. We recognize that employees may need outside interventions to settle disputes, especially when these problems affect productivity and the rest of the work team. Early intervention can be helpful and keep a problem from escalating into long-term resentment and potential violence.

PROBLEMS ADDRESSED The EAP can help with such problems as:

  • Alcohol and drug dependencyCareer developmentConflict with supervisors or co-workersDepression or anxietyFinancial problemsGrief and lossJob stressMarital and family problemsLife transitions
  • Trauma
