Oakland City Council's Ordinance opposing predatory mortgage lending

The Oakland City Council ordinance opposing predatory mortgage lending and prohibiting abusive lending practices in the City of Oakland is a national model for local jurisdictions looking to protect their residents and to fight predatory lending at the grassroots level. Council Chair Ignacio de la Fuente and Vice Mayor Jane Brunner were leaders in the Council's fight to stop predatory mortgage lenders from stealing the wealth and homes of local residents. The entire City Council worked with local community groups to craft and pass a strong anti predatory lending ordinance despite intense mortgage industry opposition. Despite legal efforts of the mortgage industry, the ordinance still stands as a monument to local communities vigorously protecting their most vulnerable populations: the elderly, the poor, people of color.
