Shelters & Housing in Oakland

The City of Oakland contracts with many non-profit organizations to provide the following shelter and housing services and facilities.  Click on any link for more information.

  • Shelters - information about temporary lodging for homeless persons.
  • Transitional Housing - The Transitional Housing Program/Families In Transition (THP/FIT) program provides housing with case management ans support services to families for up to 24 months. The Transitional Housing program is designed to assist those families who are experiencing episodes of homelessness to sustain themselves and assist in bringing about stability in the family unit through services provided. These families are further assisted in obtaining permanent housing.
  • Special Needs/AIDS / Supportive Housing - information about long term housing facilities that provide support services such as case management, healthcare, job and life skills training and legal assistance.
  • Forced Relocation -  The housing services section of this website has information about rights and benefits entitled to people who have been forced out of their homes due to a landlord's failure to comply with City codes, or due to a government action such as highway construction.
