Seismic Safety Improvement Program

 

Purpose

Provides matching grants to owner-occupied low-income households for the completion of seismic retrofit repairs.

 REQUIREMENTS

Eligible Applicants Oakland property owners living in the dwelling to be modified.

Location

Property must be located in one of the Redevelopment Project Areas. See Redevelopment Project Area Maps.

Eligible Properties 1 to 4 unit properties.

 Income

Applicant’s annual family income cannot exceed 80% of the established HUD area median income for the area*. Income of all family members who are 18 years or older must be considered.

 Occupancy

Applicant must occupy the property
Eligible Uses Grant funds may only be used for seismic retrofitting which includes foundation bolting, building perimeter and intermediate foundations, site improvements, strengthening of shear walls and pony walls, and installation of state-certified earthquake-resistant bracing systems. Non-structural mitigation includes replacing and bracing masonry chimneys, providing flexible connections to utility lines, installation of state-certified gas safety shut-off valves, water heater strapping, securing of ceiling light fixtures.
