  Chief Technology Officer

It is the responsibility of the Chief Technology Officer to recommend the direction of Technology for the City of Oakland. It is important to balance the needs of the individual departments with the needs of the entire enterprise. Departmental technology needs are met through specific applications that meet the operational needs of the department while operating in an enterprise environment. Citywide applications such as telephones, radios, payroll, financial systems, and other system wide applications are coordinated to ensure the greatest savings and security to the City of Oakland. Standards and Policies are regularly published to ensure compliance with industry and City best practices and to ensure maximum secure computing time.

  Administration Reprographic Services

The IT Administrative Services Section provides direction relative to information technology policy and implementation issues; develops and facilitates the implementation of action plans to address current and future City information technology needs; and manages the Information Technology Division's resources to meet the goals of the Mayor and Council.

In coordination with the Finance and Management Agency, the IT Administrative Services Section also provides support related to personnel management, fiscal services, including financial accounting, oversight of expenditure and revenue projections and budget development; agenda management; customer service and training and overall administrative support for the various sections within the division.

Under the direction of the IT Administrative Services Section, Reprographic Services provides citywide service in printing, high volume copying and binding.

  Customer Support

The Customer Support Section / Help Desk is fulfilling the necessity to provide high quality support in today's fast moving IT environment. The Help Desk staff responds to approximately 1700 calls from all City Agencies and Departments each month with 48% of all calls being resolved immediately.

The Operations staff monitors one of the City's three data centers and supports the City's back up strategy. Voicemail administration is also a part of the Customer Support Section.

  Desktop/Server Support

The Desktop and Server Support Section maintains and supports the enterprise servers for the City of Oakland.  This section also provides microcomputer support (both advice and assistance) for most of the Agencies/Departments throughout the City.  The Desktop and Server Support Section is responsible for the development and maintenance of microcomputer hardware and software standards.

  Gis & Internet/Intranet Services

The GIS department (Geographical Information Systems) captures, stores, analyzes, and displays geographically referenced information. This information is then utilized by public service agencies as well as the citizens of Oakland in scientific investigations, resource management, and development planning. In addition, applications and intranet web services are developed by this department to facilitate the distribution of information within the city government and to all external citizens.

  Networking Engineering Services

The Network Service Division provides customer service, enterprise connectivity, and network engineering for City associates connecting to the network infrastructure. Network Engineering staff maintain the City's wide area network, prepares short and long-range network strategies, organizes, manages and directs the work of network projects including management of outside consultants. The Network Services Division is responsible for the development of the City's Network access and security policies, standards, and technical specifications.

  Systems & Database Administration

The Systems and Application Developement Group is responsible for overseeing Enterprise level database development and management. They are responsible for generating reports or queries for City Management, Council and various agencies. In addition to database management, the systems and database administration group is responsible for implementing an Enterprise level storage protection scheme for data within City of Oakland information systems.

  Radio/Wireless Services

The Radio/Wireless Division provides customer service, in the form of routine and repair maintenance, for the Citywide Public Safety radio system. This division provides radio repair services for a number of outside agencies whose radios utilize the City of Oakland radio system for their communication needs. The Electronic Technician staff provides assistance and engineering to City agencies for their over the air communication needs for both voice and data. Radio/Wireless division staff maintain a variety of electronic equipment including wireless networks, camera security systems, satellite systems, cable tv, cellular services, audio video systems, and public address systems.
