Economic Development
Councilmember Nadel has worked hard to encourage sustainable development appropriate to each area of District 3. The term sustainable development implies the 3 E's of sustainability: economic prosperity, environmental enhancement and social equity. In each development, Nadel looks for opportunities for local jobs and contracts, affordable housing, green building techniques, recycling of construction and demolition debris, and water conservation landscaping and hardware to be incorporated into the project designs.
- West Oakland - Councilmember Nadel has been instrumental in moving forward with a West Oakland Redevelopment Area that will benefit the residents of the area. Ms. Nadel worked with the Project Area Committee that was elected by the West Oakland Community, to establish a Redevelopment Plan that will reinvest much needed funds into the community, emphasizing smart growth and neighborhood friendly development. She is also working with the West Oakland Commerce Association and West Oakland residents in a major tree-planting initiative to beautify the area and provide shade to the "heat islands and to encourage new clean industry to develop in the West Oakland industrial area."
- Downtown - Councilmember Nadel has been working to bring retail and housing developments to create a more vibrant downtown, and provide much needed housing and shopping opportunities for the people of Oakland. She is working with City Staff and community leaders to design a signature project that will lead to the revitalization of Uptown (around the old Fox Theater). She will also encourage the emerging growth of the Arts District in this area. Nadel also started the street artist program in Oakland which allows artists to sell their work at specific locations around the city for a small annual fee.
- Adams Point - Ms. Nadel is working with the Adams Point community to bring park and lake improvements and neighborhood serving retail to the Lake Merritt/ Grand Avenue area. The City just finished an urban design plan that will help attract the type of businesses and development that citizens want, and provide pedestrian safety and ADA accessibility along Grand Ave. With the passage of Measure DD (The Oakland Clean Water, Safe Waterfront Parks and Recreation Bond), many of the community visions and ideas that have developed over many years will soon become a reality.
