Outline

 

1)   Introduction

2)   Smoke Detectors

i)    Function - how they work

ii)   Batteries / Hardwired

iii)  Purpose: Smoke is poison and puts you deeper and deeper asleep you need smoke detectors to wake you up so you can escape in time.

3)   Escape

i)   Crawl Low Under smoke

ii)   Doors

iii)  Sleep with your door closed.

iv)  Do not open door if smoke is coming in around it or under it.

v)   Feel the door. Do not open if door, doorframe, or door knob are warm.

vi)   Know two ways out of your room.

4)   Using a Secondary Exit

i)    Single story

(a) Window Bars / Releases

ii)    Second floor

(a) Escape Ladder

iii)  Apartment Buildings

(a) Know all the stairways, hallways and doors to exit

5)   Outside Meeting Place

i)       Pick an outside meeting place TODAY!

ii)   Pick a meeting place outside the house and away from the front of the house.

iii)  Tell everybody in your house where to meet.

iv)   Get out and stay out.

v)      Don’t go back for anything not even pets.

6)   If You Can't Get Out

i)    Buy time, until the OFD can get to you, not long, just a few minutes

ii)   Keep door closed

iii)  Get low! Stay low!

iv)  Block smoke, stuff cracks with sheets, tee shirt etc.

v)   Wrap up, cover nose and mouth

vi)   Signal at window

vii) Wait don't panic

7)   Reporting an Emergency

i)    Call 911 from outside the burning House.

ii)    It helps to know the address but it is not essential, call even if you don't know the address.

iii)  Do not hang up until the dispatcher on the line tells you to.

iv)  911 system is meant to save lives do not call if no life threatening condition exists

8)   Fire Prevention

i)    Heaters

(a) Never get too close to a heater / floor heaters  

(b)  Keep everything at least three feet away from a heater (as far away as you are tall)

(c)  Never leave a heater on when you are gone or asleep

ii)   Cooking Fires

(a)   Do not use water or flour on a grease fire.

(b)  Turn off heat and cover with a lid or baking soda

iii)  Gas

(a)   If you smell gasoline there are fumes. Fumes can catch fire, get away and stay away call 911

(b)  If you smell gas in the house get out. Do not turn on lights or open windows just leave and call 911

iv)   Electrical hazards

(a)   No overloaded circuit, no octopus plugs

(b)  No cords under rugs or over nails

(c)   No frayed or worn cords

9)   STOP DROP ROLL (review)

(At this age children can be taught that it is never OK to knock someone to the ground, unless, they are on fire and you can protect your hands with a coat, jacket, rug, blanket, and make them roll to put the fire out.)
