R-1 Requirements

R-1 occupancies, apartments, condominiums, hotels, and motels are regulated by the California State Fire Marshal’s Office. The City of Oakland , as the local jurisdiction, is required to enforce State regulations.  These facilities are required to have an annual comprehensive inspection, including both interior and exterior review of the building.

Any deficiencies/violations found during an inspection are required to be corrected immediately.  Should repairs take longer than 30 days, owners may submit a compliance plan to the Oakland Fire Department for approval by the Fire Marshal.  Any extension and/or compliance plan must be submitted in writing within 14 days of receipt of violations noted on the inspection report. The Fire Marshal reserves the right to approve or deny any extension and/or compliance plan submitted.

To schedule your annual inspection or inquire about requirements, please call the  Fire Prevention Bureau at (510) 238-3851.
