Dogs at Lakeside Park/Lake Merritt Lakeside Park/Lake Merritt receives thousands of visitors who enjoy the park and its amenities. Dogs are prohibited from entering the park because it is the oldest wildlife refuge in California and laws have been passed to protect the wildlife (Statues of California: 18th Session Chapter CCXXIV). Patrons are encouraged to walk their dogs on the sidewalk outside of the park, so as to not disturb the wildlife along the five bird islands and around the Lake. For more information on the Rotary Nature Center and Wildlife Refuge please contact the Rotary Nature Center at (510) 238-3739.
The City of Oakland prohibits dogs in all wildlife, natural areas, ball fields, schools, playgrounds and parks with the exception of Dimond Park, Glen Daniel/King Estate Park, Hardy Dog Park, Joaquin Miller Park, Leona Park, Knowland Park, *Shepherd Canyon Trail and *Regional Parks. *Additional rules and regulations apply, please contact the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD) for more information at (510) 562-PARK.
