Senior Band at FM Smith Recreation Center
The Office of Aging, Health and Human Services (AHHS) provides health and education, employment and community support to the children, youth, adults and seniors of the City of Oakland. Through its many programs, AHHS administers childhood health and education at 21 Head Start Centers, provides a federally-funded free summer lunch program, and provides employment, training, transportation, case management and referral services to seniors.
Seniors may spend their leisure time at any of the four multi-purpose senior centers located throughout the City of Oakland and serve as "foster grandparents" to youth at-risk. AHHS is administering the City's Welfare to Work Program, which provides comprehensive case management and supportive services to disadvantaged Oakland residents. In addition, the Welfare to Work Program implemented a mentoring program this year to provide personal assistance to individuals entering the workforce after an extended period of absence.
