Parks and Recreations Shining Star
The City of Oakland, Office of Parks and Recreation (OPR) is proud to recognize and show appreciation by acknowledging and taking pride in our dedicated, hard working, knowledgeable, and service orientated employees, volunteers, programs and partners who strive for excellence. We are committed to continually provide the very best service, and improve our facilities, parks, and recreation centers.

In order to acknowledge such outstanding performance, the Office of Parks and Recreation (OPR) features a spotlight on our services, programs, facilities, parks and recreation centers, which may be in conjunction or collaboration with a sponsor or partner.

Aquatics Unit
The City of Oakland's Aquatic Unit has a long standing history of quality year-round and summer swimming activities. The department maintains and provides tiny tots, youth, adults and seniors with quality programs, classes and safe water activities at seven different poll sites (two of which belong to and are maintained by the Oakland Unified School District). To ensure that all sectors are included there are inclusive programs, special accomodations and wheel chair lifts available at Temescal, Castlemont and Lions Pool. An alternative inclusive device is available at the other pool locations, to lift only the individual and not a wheel chair into the pool.

The Aquatics Unit is committed to the Oakland community by providing a wide variety of beneficial programming for individuals and groups, continually striving for excellence, maintaining public safety and saving lives through preventative and emergency care. What services does Aquatics provide, you may ask? Aquatics provides low cost swim classes starting with tiny tots and continuing through seniors, junior lifeguard training, CPR, first-aid, and if you simply want to beat the heat, come and join us for recreational swimming!

Swimming promotes healthy living, as it is a low impact form of exercise that is beneficial at any age, for those young or just young at heart. Learning to swim, abiding by safety rules and regulations, learning CPRS and first-aid help to reduce the rate of drowning accidents and fatalities. Lifeguards are hardworking, committed, dedicated and often guardians of our lives, providing an invaluable service that cannot be repaid or thanked enough.

The Aquatics Unit is saluted and honored for their effort, dedication and committment to the Oakland community, for the countless services and responsibilities that they facilitate and provide.
