Planetarium Show Will Mark the Landing of Rover
Oakland ~ Chabot Space and Science Center will be marking the landing of the Mars rover Spirit with a special planetarium show tonight, the first of several red planet events to be held throughout the month.

NASA's Mars program will be studying two Mars rovers during the next month if they land on the planet in tact. Spirit, set to land at about 8:45 tonight, is designed to study the rocks in Gusev Crater to see if the planet was once wet enough to support life.

Another craft, Opportunity, is set to land on the planet January 24. It will investigate an area with gray hematite, a mineral that forms in water.

Chabot will celebrate Spirit's landing with a 9:00 p.m. showing of its "Return to the Red Planet" planetarium program tonight.

When and if the rovers start sending images, Chabot will broadcast those images on television screens throughout the center.

"We will also be updating our planetarium show and the Mars Encounter Exhibit," said Chabot marketing director Judyth Collin.

In Chabot's Family Science Workshop, "Rovers on Mars," children will operate a remote-controlled Mars rover, build a candy rover and operate a stream table.

Workshops will be January 24 and February 14 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for young people.

At 6:30 p.m. January 17, David Grinspoon will discuss his book, "Lonely Planets: The Natural Philosophy of Alien Life" as part of the Chabot Distinguished Lecture series. Berkeley astronomer Ken Croswell will discuss his book, "Magnificent Mars," at 6:30 p.m. January 31. Tickets to each lecture are $5.
