Town Hall Meeting to Discuss Diabetes Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Friday, January 09, 2004 By Staff Reports Event to Address Surge in Diabetes Oakland ~ A town hall meeting in Oakland on Saturday will address the diabetes epidemic in Alameda County and what people can do about it. The National Center for Minority Health Disparities, Children's Hospital Oakland and the Ethnic Health Institute are sponsoring the meeting, which is open to the public. About 280 people in Alameda County died from diabetes in 2000 -- a higher rate than in neighboring counties. Incidence of Type 2 diabetes is on the rise among people of all ages, including children. The death rate among Latinos with diabetes is twice that of whites and Asians in the county, and the death rate for African Americans is triple that of whites and Asians. The meeting will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the East Oakland Multipurpose Senior Center, 9255 Edes Avenue.
