Opera Chimes at Chapel

A Sunday Afternoon Musical and Tea Series
Oakland ~ The Oakland Lyric Opera and Chapel of the Chimes brings the community a "Sunday Afternoon Musical and Tea Series." This series of seven musicales with tea service will be performed at the Chapel of the Chimes on Sunday afternoons.

The series opens with "Romance" featuring soprano Kaye Devries, baritone Leland Shanley Morine and piano accompanist David Miotke performing music of popular composers including Nacio Herb Brown, Ernest Charles, Rudolph Friml, George Gershwin, Otthmar Klose, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giacomo Puccini, Richard Rodgers, Sigmund Romberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

February 29 brings "Tardeada in a Spanish Garden." Three Bay Area soloists collaborate for the first time in a mixed program blending guitar, flute and voice. Darla Wigginton, mezzo-soprano; Richard Flores, classical guitarist, and Martha Rodriquez Salazar, flutist/singer, will perform solos and collaborate on pieces by Manuel de Falla, Silvestre Revueltas, Ariel Ramirez, Xavier Montsalvatge, Alberto Ginastera and Hector Villa-Lobos.

April 25 brings "Lillie" featuring soprano Karen Melander-Magoon with piano accompanist Ellen Defner. Composed, staged and performed by Karen Melander-Magoon, piano arrangements are by Frank Fanning, opera coach and conductor. A musical story of the life of the Victorian actress Lillie Langtry, friend of Edward VII, Oscar Wilde, Somerset Maugham and adored from afar by Judge Roy Bean.

The series continues on June 27 with "Latin Potpourri" featuring local tenor Jorge Orlando Gomez, a native of Chile, and pianist/accordianist David Miotke, collaborating on classical and folk music of Latin America including Argentina, Mexico and Spain.
