OCO concert features talented young trombonist Posted in the Contra Costa Times on Friday, January 13, 2006 Written by Jon Kawamoto Callan Milani, a freshman at USC's Thorton School of Music and finalist in the 2005 Oakland East Bay Symphony's Young Artist Competition, will be featured at Oakland Civic Orchestra's Jan. 22 concert. The concert will begin at 4 p.m. and will be at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland at 114 Montecito Ave. In 2004, the Oakland Civic Orchestra formed a partnership with the Oakland East Bay Symphony to create more performance opportunities for young musicians like Callan, a trombonist. Callan will perform Eric Ewazen's "Ballade for Bass Trombone, Harp and String Orchestra." The Jan. 22 concert will also feature three additional pieces: "Sinfonia in Bb Major, Opus 18" by Johann Christian Bach; "Symphony of Wind Instruments" (Original Version) by Igor Stravinsky; and "Appalachian Spring" (Original Version) by Aaron Copland. This is the second young artist finalist OCO has featured. Last May, Katherine Lee performed the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major. The Oakland Civic Orchestra, conducted by artistic director Martha Stoddard, is celebrating its fourteenth year of providing free classical music to the local community. OCO is a volunteer community orchestra bringing together musicians of all ages and backgrounds to perform first-rate concerts. OCO is supported by the Friends of Oakland Parks and Recreation and is funded by the City of Oakland Office of Parks and Recreation, donations from the public, and membership dues.
