Port Tower Renamed to Honor Late Activist Post in the Oakland Tribune on Friday, January 23, 2004 Written by Heather MacDonald, Staff Writer In Memory of West Oakland Community Activist Oakland ~ The rebuilt observation tower in Port View Park at the Port of Oakland will be dedicated Saturday to the memory of West Oakland community activist and environmentalist Chappell Roland Hayes. Hayes, the late husband of Councilmember Nancy Nadel, known for tirelessly "fighting the good fight" on behalf of clean air and troubled youth, died in 1994 of pancreatic cancer. "He was a visionary, an incredible community leader and of course a wonderful husband and father," Nadel said, recalling Hayes's battle against the shipment of nuclear fuel rods through the Port of Oakland Although Nadel originally petitioned the Port Commission to rename the entire Port View Park for her husband, she said it is appropriate the tower will bear Hayes' name. "Before the tower was damaged in the Loma Prieta earthquake, we would often go there to work out family differences because there was enough space for us to calm down and work things out," Nadel said. The rebuilt signal tower will feature an exhibit about the region's historical railroad era, maritime activities and environmental habitat. The 360-degree view from tower windows offers a striking vista of San Francisco Bay, the city and the East Bay hills, as well as the shoreline and busy terminals. The dedication is set for 11:00 a.m. at 2777 Middle Harbor Road near 7th Street. The public is welcome. Contact Heather MacDonald at## hmacdonald@angnewspapers.com. The Oakland Tribune: Cityside
