Grant Workshops to Benefit Potential College Students Post in the Oakland Tribune on Saturday, January 24, 2004 Written by Staff Reports Class Covers Grant Applications, Other Financial Aid Oakland ~ High school students and parents interested in free money for college can take advantage of a workshop Sunday on how to apply for state grants and other financial aid. The Cash for College workshop will focus on low-income or first-generation college students who plan on attending school in the next academic year. But anyone who may need financial aid to go to college is encouraged to attend the event, sponsored by a number of government agencies and private groups. "Attending a workshop takes only a few hours and can literally change the course of a student's life," said Ellen Cunningham of Chela Education Financing, a not-for-profit student loan and scholarship company participating in the workshop. Students who attend will learn how to secure Cal Grants, which can give almost $5,000 to students attending University of California schools. The money is a grant and does not have to be repaid. Parents should bring their 2003 federal tax return forms or other relevant proof of income. Parents and students should also bring valid state identification and know their Social Security numbers. Workshops will take place at 1:00 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Life Academy, 2111 International Boulevard. The Oakland Tribune: Cityside
