New bike lanes under consideration

Oakland ~ The city is proposing new bicycle lanes on a 1-mile stretch of Bancroft Avenue near Eastmont Mall that will be a boon to cyclists who want to pedal from High Street to the San Leandro border.

The Public Works Agency has proposed new bike lanes on Bancroft Avenue between 66th and 82nd avenues to link lanes that already run below 66th and above 82nd avenues.

The new lanes are part of a broader project to link Bancroft Avenue with proposed bike lanes on Foothill Boulevard and ultimately allow cyclists to ride from Lake Merritt nearly 10 miles to the San Leandro border.

Bicycle groups have been pushing for the new lanes for years. Al Joseph, president of the Oakland Yellowjackets cycling club, said many members do not ride on stretches of Bancroft because of safety concerns.

The Public Works Department and Councilwoman Desley Brooks are seeking public comment before the final details are worked out. Brooks can be reached at (510) 238-7006 or dbrooks@oaklandnet.com.
