Tri-School Art Show a Big Hit Post in the Piedmonter a publication of the Contra Costa Times on Friday, January 30, 2004 Written by Cindee de la Vara, Staff Writer Oakland ~ This year's Tri-School Art Show was a display like no other. "It was super great this year," said PAINTS president Karen Stanton. "The slide show was a nice addition. It gives insight into what the students are doing in the classrooms." A slide show that ran in a 15-minute loop shared images of artists working on drawings and sculptures, as well as students' projects. PAINTS member Rosa Downey got the idea for a slide show at one of the group's meetings and immediately began planning its debut. Some parents hope to use the slide show again at "Art Is Education" events, organized by Alameda County, in March. "The slide show worked out well," said Downey. "There were an incredible number of people at the show," said PAINTS member Rosa Downey, who estimated that 300-plus people attended. Oakland's Museum of Children's Art, MOCHA, supported the art show by setting up three stations of simple, appealing activities for students. The mask-making table was popular with the very young. "Will (Andreoni) made wearable art," said Stanton of her 3-year-old son. "It was very cute." Stations for book-making and creating pop-up dioramas with a foreground, middle ground and background were set up for older kids. "There were more three-dimensional pieces on display than usual," said Downey. "The collection of kachina dolls was especially nice." Nearly 80 sculpture exhibits were on display, as well as a paneled gallery of students' drawings and paintings. PAINTS encourages students to share their work and achievement with others in a variety of media. Students are preparing artwork for the monthlong "Art Is Education" program in March and birdhouse designs for the May birdhouse contest, Stanton said.
