East Bay teens go to film festival Documentary on Sundance planned Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Thursday, January 27, 2005 By Alex Katz Oakland Seven teenage filmmakers left Wednesday for the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, where they plan to shoot a documentary about their experiences. Group members, mostly Oakland high school students, have been learning about filmmaking and production at The Factory, a local after-school program. The Sundance festival promises to be a crash course in the film industry for the students, many of whom said they want to work in the business. "I even got a manicure for this," said Paolo Sambrano, an 18-year-old student at Diablo Valley College. Sambrano plans to direct the documentary about the trip. He said his last film was a "highly caustic piece" called "The Jennifer Lopez Film Retrospective." The Factory is part of the Oakland-based Youth Sounds program, which teaches video, audio and music production to Bay Area youngsters. Before the November election, a public service announcement created by students in The Factory won second place in a national contest run by MTV. Students got some small grants to pay for the trip from the Marcus A. Foster Educational Institute. They also sold Youth Sounds products, such asa DVD of student-made films and music videos, to raise money. A company called Salesforce.com also donated funds through its foundation. One of the students going on the trip, McClymonds High senior Vernell Harbin, gave up being captain of his school's wrestling team to spend more time working at The Factory. "Movies are my thing," Harbin said. "I'm all about camera composition, but I fell in love with editing, too." Harbin said he has traveled out of state only once before, when the program took a number of students to New York. "I feel I'm very lucky to be involved with a program like this," he said. The students' itinerary includes film screenings, workshops, dinners and other events. As for schmoozing with celebrities, a group of young people with a hand-held camera should have plenty of opportunities. "I want to run into (actor) Adrian Brody," Sambrano said. "He's basically the inspiration for my hair style." Oakland Tribune
