The event is a fundraiser for the organization. Through the charity group, firefighters can request funds and resources to create a "random act of kindness" to benefit needy individuals and families they see in the community and on their emergency calls.

Over the past three years, the group has helped cover funeral expenses for families of fire and accident victims, purchased appliances for the elderly, replaced stolen bikes for children; and purchased computers for schools.

The firefighters' charity has also organized a reading program in which firefighters visit schools and read to children, a "Citizen Hero" program that recognizes Oakland residents who perform heroic deeds, and the Books and Balls program that provides schools with books and playground equipment.

This year's guest of honor will be Dennis Smith, founding editor of Firehouse magazine and author of "Report from Ground Zero."

The event will also feature the Prescott Circus Theater, a silent auction and a raffle drawing for a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

KRON Channel 4 news reporter Noel Cisneros and firefighter Melvin Andrews will both serve as master of ceremonies.
