Group Honors Alameda County Residents
Oakland ~ An astronaut, an exceptional high school student and a woman who started a television station are among the 10 women inducted this year into the Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame.

"We have an incredible group, once again," said County Administrator Susan Muranishi, co-chairwoman of the Hall of Fame Planning Committee. "We have an unbelievable number of very bright, accomplished women who are working in many ways to better our community and the world."

The Inductees Are:

Sonjai Parker Redmond of Hayward, vice president of student affairs at California State University, Hayward, who has been a voice for student access and equity for more than 25 years.

Sandy Ferreira of Fremont, the city's senior park ranger for the last 15 years and district manager of Alameda County's California Wood Duck Program. She led volunteers in the creation of the Tree Swallow Nest Box Program at Fremont's Central Park and works with local Eagle Scout projects.

Rebecca Denison of Berkeley, founder of WORLD, or Women Organized to Respond to Life-Threatening Diseases, which works with women around the globe who are infected with HIV. WORLD began in Denison's living room 13 years ago.

Nancy E. O'Malley of Oakland, chief assistant district attorney for Alameda County and former head of the county's sexual assault unit. She advocates for justice for domestic violence victims.

June A. Cook of Oakland, golf and business director of LPGA-USGA Girls Golf Club, who works through the Upward Bound program to give young people opportunities to play golf.

Erin Nikole Gums of Oakland, a senior at Athenian School in Danville. Erin maintains a 4.7 grade point average while performing more than 200 hours of community service a year, including building homes for low-income families in Mexico.

The women will be honored at an awards ceremony March 6 at the Marriott Hotel in Oakland. Tickets are $55 and the public may attend. Call (510) 535-7414 for reservations or more information.
