Famed cartoonist to appear at comic shop book signing Posted in the Contra Costa Times on Friday, February 11, 2005 Written by Staff Writers In honor of Black History Month and African American comic strip artist Morrie Turner's 40th anniversary of his famous strip "Wee Pals," Dr Comics and Mr Games on Piedmont Avenue is hosting Turner at a Feb. 19 book signing. The signing will be from 1-4 p.m. at the store at 4014 Piedmont Ave. "Wee Pals" was first syndicated Feb. 12, 1965. At the time, Turner, now 81, was the only black syndicated cartoonist. His "Wee Pal's" strip is currently syndicated in more than 40 newspapers across America, and Morrie still produces on average one strip per day. Morrie will be featuring his latest publication, "Super Sistahs," published by Bye Publishing of Oakland. This book portrays high-achieving African American women from history in Turner's trademark "Wee Pals" comic strip format. Turner is the winner of the 2000 Charles M. Schulz "Sparky" award from the Cartoon Museum of San Francisco and the 2003 Lifetime Achievement award from the National Cartoonists Society. Dr Comics and Mr Games has been on Piedmont Avenue since 1990 selling comics and games to enthusiasts of all ages. In 1994, Dr Comics and Mr Games was the winner of the "Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Award," the most prestigious award in the comic retailing industry.
