Free Computer Literacy Program for Elderly and New Immigrants Posted in the Oakland Public Library Website on Monday, February 23, 2004 In March, Oakland Public Library's Asian Branch will open a brand new Computer Learning Center in the heart of Oakland's Chinatown and begin offering free computer literacy classes in Cantonese, Mandarin and English. With funding from a California State Technology Act grant, the library has purchased six brand new PC computers dedicated to classes for under-served segments of the surrounding community. The focus of the center is to teach Asian elderly and new immigrants basic computer and Internet skills, and librarians estimate the new program can train up to 500 people this fiscal year. In addition to serving the Chinese American community, the new Computer Learning Center will begin to offer classes for Oakland's Korean and Vietnamese communities in the coming months. Small classes of up to ten students will meet for two hours per week in three-week sessions that teach computer basics, email, Internet searching and surfing. The new computers have broadband capability and offer multi-lingual interfaces in order to display Asian language characters. To sign up for a class, patrons must register in person at Asian Branch, located inside the Pacific Renaissance Plaza at 388-9th Street, Suite 190, in downtown Oakland. The Asian Branch Library is a unique and very busy branch of the Oakland Public Library, offering books, audio, and newspapers in multiple languages. Staff here checked out over 27,000 books to patrons in the month of January 2004, and the branch's public events frequently draw large crowds. In addition to the new computers for class use, the Asian Branch maintains eight computers at the library for public use. For more information, please call Branch Manager Marjorie Li or Project Coordinator Janet Cheung at the Asian Branch, (510) 238-3400, or visit the Library's Web site at www.oaklandlibrary.org. The Oakland Public Library is a department of the City of Oakland.
