Red Cross Offers Free CPR Training Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 Written by Oakland Tribune Staff Writers The American Red Cross Bay Area chapter will hold a free CPR preparedness class March 13 in its annual effort to increase public safety. Participants will learn adult CPR, care for choking victims, rescue breathing and disaster preparedness. Those who complete the training will receive a certificate in adult CPR, good for one year. Classes will last four hours and are available in English and Spanish. Held in six Bay Area counties, the trainings are part of the Red Cross's mission to familiarize people with life-saving skills. About two-thirds of cardiac deaths occur before the patient reaches a hospital. Experts estimate that CPR can save the lives of 43 percent of cardiac arrest victims. In Alameda County, the trainings will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1323 Central Ave., Alameda; Patten University, 2433 Coolidge Ave., Oakland; and the Celebration Christian Center, 1135 Bluebell Drive, Livermore. In Contra Costa County, the training sessions will be held at Acalanes Adult Center, 1363 Tice Valley Blvd., Walnut Creek, and Contra Costa Community College, 2600 Mission Blvd., San Pablo. In San Mateo County, sessions will be held at College of San Mateo, 1700 West Hillsdale Blvd., San Mateo, and Garfield Elementary School, 3600 Middlefield Road, Menlo Park.
