Job Help Agency Adds Men's Clothing Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 Written by Olvia Angulo, Correspondent Wardrobe for Opportunity Aids Thousands of Women Oakland ~ A local program that helps low-income women dress for job interviews is expanding its services and opening a men's clothing store. Wardrobe for Opportunity (WFO) invites people to donate clothing or volunteer as wardrobe consultants, inventory managers, career mentors, fundraising coordinators and office assistants. It also needs volunteers in such professional services as marketing, legal, accounting and public relations. The new Oakland men's clothing store is scheduled to open in downtown at the end of May after WFO leases a space. "It's not just the women who need clothing," said Karen Smith, WFO executive director. "It's the family that needs the support." Karen Furr of San Francisco has already had several interviews and hopes her new suit from Wardrobe for Opportunity will help her get a new job. "With the clothes I got today, I will look more professional," said Furr, who is looking for an administrative job. "I feel lucky to be here." Last month, program officials said they helped dress 131 women throughout the Bay Area. Clients are referred to WFO boutiques by various social service agencies. Since 1996, which was when WFO opened its first women's clothing store in Walnut Creek, about 60 percent of clients have secured jobs. Three years later, the Oakland store opened. It has served 2,500 women. After clients find a job, they receive a working wardrobe -- a variety of clothing and accessories they can wear to their new job, said Sharon Golub, who volunteers at the Oakland store, 3751 International Blvd., once a week. "I help women coordinate suits with blouses and accessories," she said. "Clients leave the store more self-confident and ready to get a job." Smith said she's inspired by the volunteers and clients who have changed their lives. "After being in this job for five years, I'm finding (the service) is increasing clients' self-esteem, which leads to personal change," said Smith, noting some 70 percent of clients are single moms.
