PAL Honors Tribune Reporter, City Lawmaker

Oakland ~ Oakland Tribune readers might imagine reporter Harry Harris is a grizzled veteran of the police beat, hardened by three decades of covering the news.

But Harris sees the good side of police work too, always answering a last-minute call to cover an Oakland Police Activities League event, whether it's a gift drive for needy families or a book reading to promote literacy.

For that reason, Harris is being honored by the California Police Activities League as media writer of the year.

"I've known Harry for 24 years, and he's always found the time to come out and cover our programs," said Oakland Police officer Margaret Dixon, executive director of the Oakland PAL. Harris coached youth baseball for 25 years, and he said the PAL programs have a positive impact on kids and help steer them in the right direction.

"I bet if you talk to some of the kids who have participated in PAL they would say it was the best experience of their life, especially in a city like Oakland, with its problems," Harris said. "Anyone who covers a police beat has to realize there is more to it than rape, robbery and murder. There's enough gloom and doom; I'm always glad to do something more uplifting."

Oakland City Councilmember Larry Reid is being honored by the organization as government leader of the year for his efforts to help Oakland youth and his success in persuading his colleagues to reopen the recreation center at Verdese Carter Park in East Oakland, which was closed to save money. The park is the headquarters for all Oakland PAL recreation and computer programs, used by 60 to 70 kids a day, Dixon said.

"I've had to come to Larry a number of times for support and for scholarships to support the seniors in PAL," Dixon said. "He's come out every time I've asked him to address an audience of young people, talking about his life and the importance of education. He even gives out his phone number and tells them they can always call if they have a problem.

"He's the type of person who really wants to make his district better. Even when it may not be a popular situation, he sticks his neck out," Dixon said. "He sends kids the message that it may not cool, but you gotta stand up for what you believe in."

Oakland Police Chief Richard Word spoke highly of both men, calling Reid a "great leader" and "tireless advocate for youth", and saying Harris "is a reporter I trust without question."
