Artists with Disabilities Perform at Alice Arts Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Thursday, March 18, 2004 Written by Staff Reports The Art of Disability Oakland ~ The Art of Disability comes to Oakland's Alice Arts Center on Saturday when New York comic Greg Walloch joins Oakland's Axis Dance Company and spoken word artist Leroy Moore at an event spotlighting artists with disabilities. "We want to celebrate artists with disabilities in a professional venue and show a range of artists," said Karen Hester, event organizer working with The Oakland Mayor Commission on Persons with Disabilities. "It's an artistic, creative experience at what it means to be disabled." Walloch has performed at venues across the nation. He has co-starred in film, television and radio projects and has several documentaries and concert productions under his belt. Axis Dance Company performs physically integrated dance featuring dancers with and without disabilities. They have won numerous awards and performed internationally. An African-American poet, activist, columnist and lecturer, Moore often mixes what it's like to be black and disabled in the U.S. Hester says that audience members can find something in the performance -- regardless of their own abilities. The disabled community can see somebody representing their life experiences on stage, she said, which is something sorely lacking in the entertainment world today. But the general public will be pleased as well. "It's going to open up a lot of people's minds what people with disabilities can do as artists," she said. "It's going to be inspiring. Anybody who comes will be impressed by the creative talent and their guts to perform." The show starts at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Alice Arts Center located at 1428 Alice Street in Oakland. A reception featuring the performers will follow. Tickets are available on a sliding scale of $12 to $50. However, no one will be turned away for an inability to pay. For more information, call (510) 654-6346. The event is wheelchair accessible and American Sign Language interpreted. Patrons are asked to refrain from wearing scented products.
