Projects encourage bike riding in the city Posted in the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday, March 18, 2005 Written by Leslie Fulbright Cyclists in Oakland are seeing improvements in amenities offered to those on two wheels, thanks to the city's effort to promote bike riding. Crews are installing racks and lockers citywide, and the first section of the Market Street Bikeway is open between MacArthur Boulevard and 57th Street. The city hopes to continue the bikeway through downtown and hopes to connect it with the Ohlone Greenway to the north and Corridor 25 to the south. Oakland published its bike plan in 1999, but recent grants have given the city a boost on a number of projects. A recent grant from the Transportation Fund for Clean Air will help Oakland provide more bike parking areas throughout the city. Racks will be installed at no charge in commercial areas, upon request. The city also has received funding for bike lockers near BART stations, which can be rented. City officials hope to have those installed in time for the annual Bike to Work Day, on May 19. The San Francisco Chronicle
