Annual White Elephant Sale Earns $1.13 million Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Thursday, March 25, 2004 Written by Oakland Tribune Staff 'Extraordinary' Tally for Event that Raises Funds' Oakland ~ Another person's trash turned into more than $1 million this year at the Oakland Museum's annual White Elephant Sale. The Oakland Museum Women's Board, a volunteer organization that works throughout the year to collect, sort and clean items for sale in February and March, on Wednesday announced a final tally of $1.13 million. "This year was extraordinary, due to the wonderful donation response from the community," said Deborah Wentworth, co-chairwoman of the sale. The White Elephant Sale started as a modest garage sale 44 years ago. It grew into what is now the largest rummage sale in Northern California, raising more than $10 million for the museum over the years. The Women's Board uses profits to support museum educational programs, exhibitions and acquisitions. The White Elephant Sale is a signature East Bay event that attracts antique collectors and bargain hunters from as far as Oregon and requires the efforts of nearly 900 volunteers. The board is already collecting donations for next year. Call (510) 238-2200 for more information. The Oakland Tribune: Cityside
