East Bay Regional Park Summer Employment Posted in Montclarion a Publication of the Contra Costa Times on Friday, March 26, 2004 Written by Ned MacKay, Staff Writer Oakland ~ It may seem a bit early to be thinking about summer jobs, but it's not. The East Bay Regional Park District is now accepting applications for summer employment in regional parks throughout the East Bay. There are openings for lifeguards, gate attendants, recreation leaders, student laborers and other positions. • To apply for a lifeguard position, you must be at least 16 years old and be able to swim 550 yards in 10 minutes or less. Lifeguards are trained by the district to rescue swimmers, enforce regulations and promote water safety at the district's swim beaches and pools. Work locations include Antioch, Berkeley, Oakland, Hayward, Castro Valley, Fremont, Livermore and Pleasanton. • Recreation leaders assist with the park district's outdoor summer programs, including day camp, family camp, family fun nights, camporees and more. They are required to attend training and will work from June through mid-August. The district is looking for energetic, creative and responsible leaders who will inspire interest in the outdoors. Applicants must be 16 or older, with a valid driver's license. • The park district also has an Interpretive Student Aide program. It's a four-year training program for high school and college students interested in careers as environmental educators. The aides generally work part time during the school year and additional summer hours. Assigned to park district visitor centers, they help conduct public programs and assist with nature research in the field. These are paid positions. • There are paid jobs available for people age 15 1/2 and older as student laborers, performing general maintenance and cleanup in the regional parks. Gate attendants, who must be at least 16, staff park kiosks and collect parking fees. It is desirable to have a valid driver's license for these positions. For details or to obtain application materials, contact the East Bay Regional Park District Human Resources Department at 510-544-2154 or visit the park district Web site at www.ebparks.org. Click on the heading "Employment" at the left side of the home page. In addition, the park district is looking for volunteers to help with the Ivan Dickson Volunteer Trail Maintenance Program. Ivan Dickson, a member of the Berkeley Hiking Club from 1926 through the early 1990s, was an avid hiker on East Bay trails well into his 80s. When he died in 1993, he left a bequest of more than $427,000 to the East Bay Regional Park District for maintenance of the trails he loved to roam. The park district used the gift to establish a fund whose income supports volunteer trail maintenance projects. The first Ivan Dickson project of 2004 was at Crown Beach in Alameda. Additional Ivan Dickson projects are scheduled during 2004: • April 24 during California State Trail Days and Earth Day at Redwood Regional Park in Oakland. • June 5 during National Trail Days at Garin Regional Park in Hayward. • October 16 on the Green Valley Regional Trail in Danville.
