Oakland ~ Now that Spring has officially arrived (the vernal equinox was Saturday), it's a great opportunity to explore some of the East Bay Regional Parks at their most green and beautiful.

To make it easier for you, Park district naturalist Mike Moran has scheduled "Views of the East," a series of hikes to three regional parks in East County. The hikes will be from noon to 3 p.m. on Sundays, March 28, and April 11, 18 and 25. Moran promises hilly but rewarding hikes, with great views of Mount Diablo and the Central Valley.

The destination this Sunday (March 28) is Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve near Antioch. On April 11, it's Round Valley Regional Preserve south of Brentwood; on April 18, it's Morgan Territory Regional Preserve just east of Mount Diablo; and on April 25, it's Black Diamond Mines again.

All the hikes are free, but registration is required, so Moran will know how many participants to expect. To register or obtain more information, call Black Diamond Mines at (925) 757-2620.

For a walk both above and below ground to experience Black Diamond's mining history, join naturalist Bob Kanagaki from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 3. Kanagaki will lead a hike on the Stewartville and Pittsburg mine trails, then conduct a tour of the Hazel-Atlas Mine.

Registration is required, and there is a $3 fee for the mine tour. Because of the mine's safety requirements, the event is restricted to ages 7 and older. Call (510) 636-1684 for information or registration.

For a seasonally themed event, join naturalist Sabrina Dussau at Black Diamond from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 9, for an Easter egg dyeing session using natural plant pigments. Participants must bring a dozen of their own eggs, and there's a $2 fee to cover cost of materials. Registration is required. Call (925) 757-2620.

Then Thursday, April 22, Dussau will host a program called "Knobbers," for youngsters ages 8 through 12, to find out what kids did for fun in Black Diamond's 19th century coal mining communities. It's from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Snacks, stories, games and crafts are all on the agenda. Registration is required, and there's a $6 fee ($8 for non-residents of the park district). Call (925) 757-2620 for registration and information.
