Depew, a Juilliard-trained trumpeter and arranger, has played with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Tommy Dorsey, Charlie Barnet and Lawrence Welk, among other greats of the swing era. He took over as the new leader of The Harry James Orchestra in 1987, after its original band leader, Harry James, died in 1983. James was one of the most popular band leaders of the World War II era, and is remembered for his colorful trumpet playing, as well as being the husband of pin-up girl Betty Grable. Dinner and dancing start at 7 p.m. on the heated hangar decks of the Hornet, the historic WWII aircraft carrier docked permanently at Alameda Point. The giant ship, now a museum, draws dance crowds in excess of 1,200 people to its three dance floors. The San Francisco Jitterbugs will provide swing lessons between 7:15 and 7:45 p.m., and will perform later in the evening. Tickets for the Swing in the Spring concert are $40 in advance; $45 at the door. For more information, call the Hornet at 521-8448, ext. 234 or visit the museum online at www.uss-hornet.org The music of Art Depew and his "hot horn" is the second in a series of four "big band" concerts hosted annually on the Hornet. The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra will play Oct. 9 during Fleet Week. The USS Hornet is located at Pier 3, Alameda Point, Alameda, 94501. The Oakland Tribune: Cityside
