Discover the Bay Area's Best Value
Thursday, April 01, 2004

And no, it's not a fast food combo. To those in the know, it's the vast resources available from Bay Area libraries. Check out a couple of best-sellers, your favorite magazine, two or three DVDs and CDs, and the savings quickly add up.

National Library Week, April 18-24, celebrates this great American bargain.

In the age of the Internet, libraries are still the first stop for many people seeking information, enjoyment and inspiration. A growing number use library Web sites to get information they need. Over 1.9 million people visited the Oakland Public Library last year - 119,000 more than in 2002! In addition, more than 115,000 people attended free library events and workshops and over 140,000 people visited its Web site.

"We're economical. We're also bigger, better and busier than ever," says Carmen Martinez, Director of the Oakland Public Library.

According to Martinez, public libraries have transformed themselves in the last 10 years thanks to new technology. Today the Oakland Public Library offers computers for public use, Internet access and assistance from librarians 24/7 via a new online question and answer service on its Web site, www.oaklandlibrary.org.

The library has added audio books, DVDs and e-books that can be read from computers at home, school or the office. We have also expanded the number and types of programs offered: everything from book clubs, exhibitions and concerts to literacy, homework help and computer classes.

"Libraries are equal opportunity providers," Martinez explains. "We welcome all people--from young to old--to learn and enjoy."

The Oakland Public Library will celebrate National Library Week with a series of special events featuring authors Daniel Ellsberg and Ayelet Waldman, the Molotov Mouths Outspoken Word Troupe, Word for Word and others. A complete schedule is available on the Library's Web site, www.oaklandlibrary.org or visit your nearest library.
