Oakland ~ The Junior League of Oakland-East Bay Inc. aim to share a brighter future with children at risk in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Two hundred members and guests attended the 10th annual spring gala, "The Glamour of Old Hollywood," held March 13 at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, to benefit community programs and projects.

"We raised about $40,000 through our gala," said league spokesperson Leslie Bates of Orinda. Benefit funds go to support the league's signature literacy project at Hoover Elementary School in West Oakland.

Other fund-raising has been achieved through sales of the Junior League's cookbook, "California Fresh Harvest: A Seasonal Journal through Northern California," with its theme of seasonal menus. The cookbook can be purchased at Cody's Books in Berkeley, Orinda Books in Orinda, Kitchen Table in Walnut Creek and at Lazy K in Lafayette.
